Frank Cockell

Died 15th April 1917

Son of Mr George Cockell 129 Charlotte St, Milton Regis, Frank joined the AIF on the 21st of June 1916. He left Sydney on the 25th of October 1916 aboard the " Ascanius" and arrived at Devonport on December the 27th. After some further training and probably a visit home to Sittingbourne ,Frank went to France leaving via Folkstone on February 24 1917 aboard the " Golden Eagle". Just over a month later he was Killed in action during the Battle of Arras.

Attempts were made by the Red Cross to find out exactly what happened to Frank. Private Sligo reported that Frank was killed by a bullet through the head just outside the village of Noriel when the Germans attacked their position. Frank died instantly and was buried where he fell. His body was probably recovered after the war and re buried in the cemetery below.

Raynard Cockell

Died 7th June 1917

Killed in action whilst in an enemy trench Raynard and four others were hit by shell fire all died instantly. He was buried on the battlefield at Messeines Ridge, but his body was never recovered afterwards as it probably could not be located due to shellfire.
