Herbert Stanley Hodges

Died 17th October 1918

Age 28

Youngest of four soldier sons of Horace & Emma of 64 Chalkwell Rd. Died at Colchester hospital. Served at Gallipoli Egypt and Palestine where he took part in the fighting for Jerusalem. On the day he was buried,  the flag on the town hall was lowered to half mast as a mark of respect to the memory of a gallant young Miltonian.

Ernest William Hook

Died 27th december 1917

Age 21

Ernest was wounded on 20th of November during General Bying's "great push" at Cambrai Ernest recieved Machine Gun wounds to his legs and lay out in open ground for several hours before he could be brought in and treated.. He was moved to the military hospital at Etaples but doctors were unable to amputate his leg as he had already lost too much blood .. On December 25th he went into a coma and never recovered, he died at 04:30 on the morning of the 27th. Before the war Ernest worked as a Clerk for the Sittingbourne Co operative Society.

Age 21

Son of Charles and Alice of 6 Albion place Green Street Charlie was one on the 20,000 who died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, On the 1st of July with the 7th Bedfordshire's the 11th Battalion stormed the southern face of the Mametz spur, this led to grim hand to hand fighting at Maple Trench. The 11th Battalion suffered 227 casualties Charlie was one of them.

Albert Hopkinson

Age 40

Albert was an Instructor at Crowborough Camp, He was training a private in the throwing of bombs when there was a sudden explosion . The private survived with the loss of his hand . Albert lost his life and his 5 children a father. He is buried at Sittingbourne Cemetery. Before the War Albert worked for Smeed Dean.
