I have been researching my Reynolds family roots and came across your very touching site. My grandmother nursed as a VAD at Whitehall. Her best friend was Doris Dean and I remember her well. After the war my grandfather Alfred Reynolds (also a local Sittingbourne councillor and methodist lay preacher) purchased Whitehall and my father - born in Bekesbourne in 1920 - was raised there after his own father died suddenly in 1923. I have some lovely photos of Whitehall and the VAD nurses - I can identify my grandmother, Hilda Jennie. Her twin brothers apparently bought the Milton Mineral Bottle(?) Ltd in 1920! My grandmother later re-married and went to live in Westagate-on-sea. Her father died and left Whitehall to her I believe but she sold it.

Thank youso much for all the time and effort that goes into this.

I was checking out the Croucher family line. My Father served in WWII, My brother in Vietnam and me in Desert Storm, OIF, OAF, and Allied Force. We are a warrior tribe. It is good to still have a blood line connection in Kent.

I was viewing the page to see if my husband's g-uncle was included and he is. There is a problem with his name though, it should be Hope Reginald Croucher. He served with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces (CEF) and died in battle in 1915. He had only been in Canada 4 years before enlisting, having been born [1884] & raised in Sittingbourne.

Your site it a tribute to those young men who gave their lives for King & country.

Fran

A great site with very interesting information. My great uncle was Sidney Anthony RIDE. His brother Lawrence (my great grandfather) emigrated to New Zealand in 1928. It was good to see a picture of Sidney and read the information about him.

Hello

I was just sitting here wondering about my towns heritage and after an hour of reading up and looking around i came across this website

I found it very compelling yet still tragic that many locals died in the war. I knew everyone was affected by The Great War but still to find a place which displays names and adresses and places i can relate to is someone more creepy to me.

Tommorow i will be going into town and will most certainly go by the memorial to visit some of the graves that were listed here.

kudos for compiling such a fantastic list to honor those lives and with the research of the individuals.

Good site. The Links pages are fabulous. I was looking for the Boulding Family but can't see any data. Any Boulding Family members welcome to contact me. I'm the Grand Daughter of John Burden Bannatyne who married Mabel Clara Boulding in c. 1905. The Webb, Couchman, Epps Families are connected here to the Bouldings.

Well Hello There

I came across this website on a Google search on some family history!! I must say thank you!!

Albert and Leonard Mears were my great uncles that were bopth killed on the same day in WW1.
I am curious to know where you got the picture of Leonard Mears,as I am trying to get information on my family history, and since you are in the U.K. you might have a few leads.

I have a picture of Albert and Leonard Mears that I can send if you would like to update your site. They were taken in around 1916

Please keep up the Good Work

Mike

A truly fascinating site. Well done. I'm inspired to go find my copy of the poem "A Private of the Buffs", and read it again ... and again.

Thank you for your efforts to remember the young men of Kent who gave their lives for King and Country.
